Professional Compliments

I caught up with a couple of old bosses recently… from way back when - and two things became apparent when we talked:

1️⃣  They thought more highly of me back then than I thought of myself. I wish they’d told me. I didn’t know.

I was doing my best to do my job well but I had a ton of self-doubt along the way.

Hearing the casual compliments at the time would have done me and my confidence the world of good.

2️⃣  Until I shared specific memories with them, they had no idea…

  • Be You, Own It

    “Obey me!!”

The second I heard my CEO yell that at me, I knew it was over. For good. I didn’t hear any of the words that followed those two words - it was like a switch went off in my head and I was done.

We had two and a half wonderful years of a great working relationship. There were a few…

  • I Did It Anyway

They said, “Don’t waste your time applying for the job, you won’t get it.” She applied. She got it.

He said, “If you don’t do as I say, you’ll regret it. I promise you.” She became a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

They said, “You’ll never finish that project ahead of schedule and the CEO won’t adjust his plans…

  • Say What You Mean

She meant “no” but she said “yes”. I planned, I got excited, I anticipated it happening… I didn’t know she wasn’t being honest - and then the “Erm… but... I’d rather not… so, no.”

This was agreed and planned seven months ago. She waited until eight days before D-day to back out. It broke my heart and…

  • Now There's Two Of Them

I stopped, and cried a little. Now there’s two of them. Two of them that look like me.

I’m impressed by Indra Nooyi and wasn’t expecting another Indian, female executive to make it to the highest ranks in the Western corporate world for another decade at least. When the announcement of…

Shine Brightly

“MY LIGHT WILL SHINE SO BRIGHTLY IT WILL BLIND YOU.” - Labi Siffre
Again? Really? This happens way too often, and not just to me. It’s not OK.

I caught up with a past friend/old work colleague a couple of months ago. When we first met, I was a fresh graduate and had just joined the corporate world. They were a senior manager. We’d been in and out of touch over the past 23 years...

  • Permission To Let Go

Letting go is scary, but if evidence is anything to go by, I’ve always come away better off once I truly do it. This is true for most of us.

I grew up in a small, tight-knit, Indian community in North West London. I was recently, intentionally left off a very long invitation list to a 50th birthday party of someone I grew up with and have known for 40 years…

  • Nip It In The Bud

Someone called me “competitive” a while back, accompanied by a grunt and an eye-roll. No smile. Clearly, they didn’t mean it as a compliment.

Context: I was participating in an ice-breaker exercise with five other people. Making an error meant being asked to sit out. At the point the comment was made, the game only had two…

  • Time To Recalibrate

    It’s not you, it’s me.

After spending nine months away from home, I managed to sneak in a two-week trip back to catch up on work admin, sleep, and to breathe.

At the end of the two weeks, I thought:“How could so much have changed here?”The thing is, “New York, it’s not you, it’s me.”…

  • Here's To 2022

Last week, I practiced what I preach and I put on my proverbial oxygen mask before helping anyone else.

I took an extra week after the holidays - vaccinated, masked, and tested - and went on a 5-day solo trip to reflect on 2021 and set myself up for 2022. It was the kindest thing I’ve done for myself in a while…

Customized Expertise Is Priceless

I’m not your average shoes, handbags, and makeup kind of gal.

It wasn’t until my mid-30s that I picked up a couple of tips and tricks from friends and began to wear makeup a little more frequently.

In all honesty, those tips weren’t relevant to my particular face shape, my features, my skin tone, my style, or who I was. They were either suited to the person advising, or they were quite generic.

  • What's Important To You?

Don’t tolerate anything that takes you away from the core of who you are.

I can guarantee you that at some point down the line, you’ll feel unfulfilled or unhappy if the work you do or the way you’re living your life is misaligned with your values.

Here’s a quick example of how easy it is to take a small mis-step and become misaligned…

  • Live By Your Values

Those who know me well, know that my Mum is my favorite person in whole world 🥰🌏

Unfortunately, she’s been unwell for a few years. Although Mum's OK (a relative term) at this very minute, she was unexpectedly taken to hospital eight weeks ago and we thought we were going to lose her 😭😭😭

I rushed back to London 🇺🇸✈️🇬🇧
